More about the trip:

This holiday in the magical Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway will not soon be forgotten. Get up close and personal with the amazing nature on hikes and bike rides in the Arctic wilderness, experience the midnight sun from a deserted white sand beach, and travel between tranquil fishing villages in your own rental car.

Day 1: Arriving in Norway

Depending on when you arrive in Oslo, you will have time to explore the city on your own.

Oslo has a range of activities and sights on offer, and you are sure to find something to suit your interests.

A NordicVisitor representative will meet and greet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in the centre of Oslo.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Norway_Parliament_in_OsloDay 2: Exploring Oslo

Today you will get to explore the Norwegian capital both by bus and by boat. Join a four-hour sightseeing tour of the top sights in Oslo, including the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump.

After a morning of sightseeing, you can spend the rest of the day soaking up the sun in one of the many bars along the Aker Brygge Marina, do some shopping or explore the city’s sights further.

Spend another night in your Oslo city centre hotel.

Day 3: Crossing the Arctic Circle

Today it is time to leave southern Norway and head north – far north.

After breakfast you will take the airport express train to Gardermoen Airport where you will board a 2 hour flight north to the city of Bodo, inside the Arctic Circle.

In Bodo Airport you will pick up your rental car and have plenty of time for the 3 hour’s drive to Skutvik, where a car ferry will take you across to Svolvaer in Lofoten.

In Svolvaer, accommodation in traditional fishermen’s cottages awaits. These quaint, yet comfortable, huts are the best way to stay when in Lofoten, and you will be spending the next 3 nights in the huts in Lofoten.

cycling-lofotenDay 4: Action in the Arctic

Make sure you fuel up at breakfast this morning, as you will need the energy for today’s activities.

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your accommodation and taken on a five-hour guided hike and bike Lofoten tour.

A leisurely bike ride along a road which is no longer in use provides amazing views and a great start to the day. Parking the bikes, the tour continues by foot up to a beautiful viewpoint where you can see stunning views to both the west and the east of the Lofoten Islands.

After your excursion, you will be transferred back to Svolvaer where you will have the rest of the day and evening at your own leisure.

If you are not too tired, make use of your rental car and the all-night daylight. Drive to one of the beaches, for example Eggum and enjoy the midnight sun in the most fantastic surroundings.

Spend the night in your fisherman’s cabin in Svolvaer.

whalesafariDay 5: Whale Safari

Make sure you don’t stay up in the midnight sun for too long, as this morning is an early start.

In the morning, drive from Svolvaer to Andenes in your rental car.  Here you will get to go on a 3-5 hour Ocra Whale Safari tour.

The drive to Andenes is very scenic and includes a short ferry between Fiskebol and Melbu, so make sure you allow enough time.

At the Andenes Whale Centre a guide will take you through the museum and give you a short introduction to the life of the Spermwhale.

Then the whale safari boat tour will take you out to sea, to an area which is one of the best places in the world to see whales, and the tours have a near 100% success rate.

A light meal will be served onboard the ship.

After your safari, drive back for your final night in Svolvaer.

Day 6: Vikings and Tranquil Fishing Villages

Today you will get the chance to explore other parts of the Lofoten archipelago.

Follow the national tourist road out to Reine, about 2 hours’ scenic drive away.  You can stop in many places along the way, including the picturesque fishing village of Henningsvaer, and the beautiful beaches at Skrova.

At Borg, you can stop for a visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum, and learn more about the area’s Viking history and traditions.

In Reine you will again be staying in comfortable fishermen’s huts right on the seaside.

reine-lofoten2Day 7: The Highest Mountain in Lofoten

After breakfast, you will have the day to spend at your leisure in the beautiful Reine area.

Join a fishing trip on one of the many boats offering short fishing trips for tourists, or a boat trip taking you out for a better view of this amazing area’s mountains, birds, beaches and landscape.

You will sail past Lofoten’s highest mountain, the Hermannsdalstinden, and the boat will stop in several beauty spots along the way, giving you the chance to explore the area further.

Spend another night in your fisherman’s cottage in Reine.

Day 8: Back to Oslo

After breakfast, you will drive even further out on the Lofoten archipelago, to the beautiful Moskenes village.

Here you will board the car ferry taking you across back to Bodo. Return your car at the airport, and board your flight back south to Oslo.

You last night in Oslo you will spend conveniently at a hotel near the airport.

Day 9: Heading Home

Depending on your flight, you may have some time to enjoy Oslo a bit more before heading home.
