Lofoten Islands: Getting there and around

Hurtigruten_TrollfjordThe most scenic way to get to Lofoten is to arrive by boat, just like fishermen have for thousands of years.

It is however probably quicker and more convenient to at least make part of your journey by plane.

Flights to Lofoten

There are a few small airports in Lofoten, but most likely you will fly to Bodo Airport or Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes, where there are regular direct flights to Oslo with both Norwegian and SAS.

Another option is to catch the twice weekly direct flight from London to Tromso, and take the Hurtigruten south to Lofoten.

You will not regret spending an extra night on the Hurtigruten cruise as it is a beautiful voyage.

Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes is approximately 2.5 hours´ drive from Svolvaer. From Bodo you can either catch a small Wideroe flight to the smaller airports in Lofoten, or go by boat.

Driving to Lofoten

To get to Lofoten from the south of Norway, you follow the E6 all the way from Oslo.

From Oslo it is a full 850 miles, so allow a couple of days. It is a really beautiful drive with lots of things to see en route.

If you have time, driving from Oslo to Bodo, catching the ferry across to Sorvaagen on the southern tip of Lofoten, and then drive north up the Lofoten archipelago, is a great trip.

From Tromso you can drive to Svolvaer in about 6 hours.

Getting around Lofoten

The best way to see Lofoten is by being able to get around a bit, either by car, boat or bicycle.

All the main islands are connected by the E10 road and traffic is sparse most of the time, but it can get busy with caravans etc. in the summer months.

Buses run the length of the E10 too, but for more freedom it is advised to either hire a car or a bike.

Check prices for car hire.
