Consider getting a OsloPass, a card which gives you free travel and entry to most attractions and museums. You can buy these from many larger kiosks and tourist offices.

Spend the night in your Oslo hotel.

Day 2: Bergensbanen and Norway in a Nutshell

View from the TrainThe Bergensbanen, or Oslo-Bergen railway line, has been voted among the 20 most beautiful train journeys in the world so make sure you get a window seat. The journey takes you all the way up the mountains, through ski resorts such as Geilo and Gol. The railway is in fact the highest railway line in Northern Europe, where it crosses the Hardanger plateau at 1,237 metres (4,058 ft) above sea level. The views are absolutely stunning!

You set off early from Oslo Central Station, and you will have the time to relax for a couple of hours aboard the train before the views kick in.

In the small village of Myrdal, you will change to the Flaam Railway. This 20km journey down to Flaam is simply astonishing, with an altitude difference of 900metres it the steepest in the world!

In Flaam you will have free entry to the museum telling you all about how the line was built.

From Flaam, a boat will take you on towards the Naeroyfjord, the narrowest and most beautiful part of the famous Sognefjord. Tiny houses and farms tucked in under majestic mountains and waterfalls make for postcard pretty views. A bus will pick you up in nearby Gudvangen and drive you through the stunning Naeroy Valley up to Voss where you will board the train again heading to Bergen.

You will spend the night in a hotel in Bergen.

Day 3: Historical Bergen

After an action packed day of travelling and fjord cruising yesterday, you will have most of the day at your own leisure to explore the beautiful historical city of Bergen.

Bergen has been a centre for trade with Europe and Northern Norway since viking times, and boasts a thriving fish market, as well as the gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage listed Bryggen port area.

Take a trip up to Floyen on the cable car and enjoy the views, and stroll through the town's many small cobbled streets.

In the evening you will board the famous Hurtigruten Coastal Cruise heading north along the Norwegian coast.

The Hurtigruten ship will be your home for the next 2 nights, as the ship makes its way to Trondheim. And there are good chances of seeing the northern lights aboard the ship, so make sure you keep an eye out in the evenings.

Day 4: Art Nouveau Aalesund

Hurtigruten calls at several smaller ports during the night and in the morning hours. After a late breakfast, the ship will arrive in the beautiful fishing village of Aalesund, where you will have the chance to explore for three hours.

The city burned to the ground in 1904, and was completely rebuilt in Art Nouveau style between 1904 and 1907. The city thus have an impressively consistent architecture.

Aboard the ship again, there will be another short stop in Molde, and another evening onboard with more chances to see the northern lights.

Day 5: Trondheim and on to The Arctic Circle

Hurtigruten docks in the old viking capital of Trondheim early in the morning. You will have the whole morning to explore this lively and historical city on your own.

Visit the famous Nidaros Cathedral or relax in one of the many cafes in town.

In the afternoon you will head to the airport to catch your short flight to Tromso, well within the Arctic Circle.

You will have the evening at your leisure in Tromso, after checking into your hotel.

Enjoy a dinner with local delicacies at one of the many excellent restaurants in town, or if you still have the energy you can go on a northern lights excursion.

Read more about what to do in Tromso.

Tromso is one of the best places in the world to see the northern ligths, so make sure you keep your eyes on the skies in the evening – perhaps whist sampling some of Tromso's lively nightlife.
