Day 1: Arrival and Northern Lights Hunting by Snowmobile

Your journey starts in Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden. It is a centre for Sami culture and heritage and you will be picked up at the airport and put up in a comfortable hotel in Kiruna. The real adventure starts just after dusk, when a local guide will take you out on a magical snowmobile safari through the quiet snowy wilderness in hunt for the northern lights.

Northern Sweden is a great place to see the northern lights as there is so little light pollution, even the smallest of displays can be seen on the ground.

Read our Top Ten Tips for Seeing the Northern Lights.

After your snowmobile safari you will be served a delicious traditional Sami meal, before heading back to your hotel for the night.

Day 2: ICEHOTEL and Husky Sledding

You start your day off with probably one of the most fun and scenic rides of your life – snugly wrapped in reindeer skins letting a band of huskies pull you on a dogsled ride through the amazing snow clad scenery of Lapland.

A trainer will show you how to control the sled and the dogs so you can have a go yourself – an experience to remember. Afterwards you´ll get a cup of coffee around the camp fire to warm up and to calm the “buzz”.

In the afternoon, you are taken to the ICEHOTEL and Ice Church in Jukkasjarvi, about 30 minutes drive from Kiruna. The hotel is built entirely by ice every single year (it melts completely in the summer) by artists from all over the world. You´ll be given a tour of the hotel and get to learn about how it is rebuilt every year. You will not spend the night in ICEHOTEL, but return to Kiruna. Want to stay in an ice hotel? Check out the northern lights holiday package which includes a stay in the Snorrisniva ice hotel in Alta, Norway.

Remember to look out for the northern lights!

Day 3: Rudolf and Samis

Today you have the chance to learn more about Sami culture and life in the Lapland region. A visit to a Sami reindeer farm in the morning, where you can have a go at driving your own reindeer sled. Lunch will be served in traditional Sami style inside a tepee. The rest of the day is free for you to spend at your leisure in the town of Kiruna.

Look out for the northern lights in the evening!

Day 4: Heading to the Norwegian Coast and Lofoten Islands

After breakfast you get on the train form Kiruna to Narvik. Make sure you get a window seat - the views are breathtaking on the last hour of the journey, as the train clings to the mountainside on its way down to Narvik. This train line was part of the reason Narvik was such an important strategic area during the Second World War.

From Narvik you continue by bus to the fishing village of Svolvaer in the world famous Lofoten Islands, where you spend the night.

Lofoten is another great place to see the northern lights, so make sure you keep your eyes open in the evening.

Day 5: Exploring the Lofoten Islands or Killer Whale Watching

You have the chance to explore the Lofoten Islands, the amazing scenery and quaint fishing communities in the daytime. Between 15 December and 15 January, there is an option to go on a killer whale safari.

Read more about what to see in Lofoten.

The Hurtigruten ship sails south in the evening, where you will have a private en-suite cabin for the next three days as you travel down the famous Norwegian coast.

This journey has been named the most beautiful sea voyage in the world, and you will not be disappointed by the mountains and fjords on show.

Day 6: Hurtigruten Coastal Cruise: The Arctic Circle and Impressive Mountain Ranges

You will cross the Arctic Circle going south and you can enjoy the view from the ship, going past sights such as the Seven Sisters mountains, Torghatten and the island of Sandnessjoen.

The ship will dock for enough time for you to get off and have a look around the cute village of Rorvik.

Day 7: Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage: Trondheim and Aalesund

First thing in the morning Hurtigruten docks in the old medieval city of Trondheim, home of the famous Nidaros Cathedral. You will have a few hours to explore this old capital of Norway and all its historic sites and buildings.

The journey continues down the coast, past the cities of Molde and Kristiansund, before reaching Aalesund. Aalesund is one of the prettiest cities in Norway, and hosts many Art Nouveau buildings. You will have the chance to spend some time in the town before the ship sails again in the evening.

Day 8: Hurtigruten Coastal Cruise: Arrival in Bergen

The ship continues south through “fjord-land” during the night and morning, arriving at its final destination, Bergen, early in the afternoon.

You will then have the chance to explore the beautiful and lively city of Bergen at your own leisure. Make sure you stroll on the UNESCO World Heritage site, Bryggen (that is Norwegian for port), and take a trip up on the cable car to enjoy the view.

You will spend the night in a hotel in central Bergen, so you have the chance to explore the nightlife in this buzzing student town.

Day 9: Departure Day

Depending on your departure time, you may have the time to do some more exploration of Bergen before the transfer from your hotel to Bergen Airport. (Note, flights are not included in the package price – Find cheap flights here.)
