Fishermen's Huts around Tromso

Lyngen_SpringIf you want a different experience, and a break from standard hotels, fishermen’s cottages is an excellent option.

Most are self catering and cater for up to 6 or even 8 people, which can be a great money saver, particularly for groups.

It is however a good idea to consider hiring a car, as most of the huts are quite a way out of town, and pretty islolated.

What are Fishermen's Cottages

Fishermen’s huts, or Rorbus, as they are called in Norwegian are, as the name implies, originally fishermen’s cottages.

In the olden days it was common to have small cottages right by the sea, normally consisting of one room, where fishermen could sleep and live ‘close to work’.

Luckily, nowadays most of the Rorbus on offer to tourists are significantly more luxurious and pleasant than the smelly and damp originals. Some even offer terraces and hot tubs!
