In the summer, the midnight sun makes it possible to be active 24 hours a day. Hiking, fishing, kayaking and mountain biking are only a few of the activities on offer.

Hiking

Locals in Tromso make use of the nature around them, and there are plenty of hiking trails around Tromso, from child-friendly Varden on the island, to the more strenuous Tromsdalstinden on the mainland.

But make sure your are prepared and have the right equipment if you are setting out on your own, without a guide. Trails and routes are not as clearly marked and well trodden as in the UK, and the mountains can be quite dangerous when the weather suddenly changes.

Alpine Skiing

Whereas Tromso is definitely not a top alpine skiing destination, there is an alpine skiing centre not far from town.

  • Tromso Alpinsenter normally opens around Christmas and stays open for as long as there is snow in the slopes (usually until end of April)

If alpine skiing is your thing, you would propbably be more interested in making your way to either Narvik, Riksgransen or Lyngen, where there are more options for you.


Eating and Drinking in Tromso

After a day of activity and fresh air, a trip to one of the many bars and restaurants in Tromso is a must. Tromso is known for its hospitality and nightlife, and there’s nothing like a Mack beer after a long day in the mountains.
